Antique C19th Hand Carved Wood New Zealand Maori Box Figure Mere Club Haka c1890
For sale is this intricately carved wooden box from New Zealand. From the hinge and oxidation patina on the wood, I would estimate that it was carved at the end of the 19th century, probably somewhere between 1890 and 1910. On the lid of the box is a great depiction of a Maori warrior holding a "mere" club and possibly performing the'haka' dance ritual. His eyes are mother-of-pearl and I believe the wood to be "heart kauri", a blond wood which has been dyed on the exterior of the box. Although the box was probably made for the tourist or export market, it is very well carved as you can see from the photos. It measures approximately 4 1/2 inches in length by 1 3/4 inches tall by 1 5/8 inches wide. It is in great condition with no chips or cracks. Please refer to photos and feel free to ask questions.
