MAORI GUGU WAR CLUB OR BATTLE AXE, NEW ZEALAND VINTAGE HANDCRAFTED WEAPON, 43 LONG, WITH AN ENLARGED KNOB AT THE END TO KEEP THE HAND FROM SLIPPING OFF. Traditional Gugu war clubs were hand carved from very HEAVY wood, and were used with two hands to break the bones and smash the skulls of the enemy. Sometimes described as Lotus or Axe Head clubs due to their resemblance to those items, they were actually named after the Butterfly Fish. These are highly collectible, due to their intricate and ornate carving and woven decorations. Because of their attractive appearance, they were often used in ceremonial and traditional dances by chiefs and priests as a symbol of rank. Maori warriors considered it most honorable to fight with clubs over any other weapon-- and without shields! Since the Maori had no metals, all their weapons were made of wood, sinew and stone.
