Tumidocarcinus giganteus fossil crab from the Miocene Southern New Zealand
TUMIDOCARCINUS GIGANTEUS CRAB FOSSIL MIOCENE SOUTH ISLAND NEW ZEALAND. These heavy crab concretions come from New Zealand and take anywhere from 20-40 hours to prepare. This one required about 30 total hours of prep work. Even after the initial prep more prep had to be done to stabilize the fossil and to bring out the features in the claws and legs. This fossil crab is large at about 8 inches in diameter. It's a gorgeous fossil with some neat 3D features. Note that further preparation work can be done (if you dare) with more advanced tools but the current state of the prep is done so as not to damage the fossil.
