1800s F Tait antique maori painting tiki canoe new zealand vtg art south pacific
The back of the board is stamped, " Prepared Students Academy Board Winsor & Newton 38 Rathbone Place London". 38 Rathbone Place is their original 1832 address. Winsor & Newton were given a royal warrant in 1841 and are known to stamp the backs of their art boards with that prestigious claim.
This board does not have the royal warrant stamp suggesting it predates 1841. There's some additional information handwritten on the back that we can't make out (pic 11 above). This would have been painted on site (it's a true location) so the landscape and clothing should help to better date it. The people in the painting will be identifiable figures who lived at this location, the great-great grandparents of current Maori families.
It is likely that this is now a well populated area, a city? Tait family descendants should be able to identify the artist (1830s-1900) and we are looking forward to hearing from them. Actual painting measures about 23" by 13". About 28" by 18" to outside of original frame.
