Maori Wahaika War Club Carved Wood Paua Shell Eyes New Zealand 34 cm
Maori Wahaika War Club Carved Wood Paua Shell Eyes New Zealand 34 cm. For your consideration, you are viewing a hand-carved wood New Zealand Maori Wahaika War Club with inlaid Paua Shell Eyes. This intricately carved wooden Wahaika was sculpted in the 1980s, and brought as a tourist souvenir and has sat in a display cabinet ever since. This was carved out of a single piece of Kauri hardwood and has a wonderful patina with rich natural wood colours in the beautiful grain in the wood. This has been expertly carved and has 2 pieces of Paua Shell inlaid as eyes, by an unknown artist who would have received their training as an apprentice to a master carver as the handwork is exceptional. The tradition is passed down within a family through many generations. Genuine old Wahaika were usually made from wood, stone and sometimes bone, however, this particular club is carved of wood.

The main feature was a carved recumbent tiki figure with inlaid paua shell eyes, on the inner edge, of the handle, that represented an effigy of a sacred ancestor or Tu or Tumatauenga The God of War. The Wahaika was held so that the effigy figure could see over the warrior's shoulder to protect his back hence the paua shell eyes on the back edge!

, and the front of the club has the sharper edge. The Maori people being fierce warriors used a wide range of hand weapons. The Wahaika is one of the several different fighting clubs used by Maori warriors. And was reserved for only the highest-ranking and most respected fighters. It is often given as a ceremonial piece on special occasions.

Clubs, Spears, and Masks are traditionally used in performances with elaborate costumed dancers, vibrant music and choreographed dance. The Maori, Polynesians, and Melanesians in the Oceanic region, all believed that weapons were not just things use to fight but objects that possessed a spiritual power. The specific carvings on weapons are designed to give power to these objects and gain a life of their own, capable of absorbing the mana (A supernatural power that can be inherited or transmitted).
