This jade was imported to France over 80 years ago and recently acquired by me. Black jade is very rare in New Zealand. This piece is not Cowell or the western Australian material, it is river worn black nephrite. Because the stone had been sitting in the dirt and weather for so long in France, the outside is a little beat up and worn.
I have a few other blocks from the same stone, and once cut the material looks much better. It also works up quite easy, even though it may not look like it from the outside. The color has a dark olive undertone, but is closer to black than dark olive. My collection features a wide variety of jade specimens from across the globe, perfect for every price point and purpose.
