New Zealand Hydrogrossular Garnet rough aka Transvaal Jade

A rare large river stone of grossular garnet found in the North of the South Island of New Zealand. Known as Transvaal Jade or hydrogrossular garnet jade, g rossular garnet is the calcium-aluminium variety of the garnet group. Very similar to Jadeite this stone is very hard, and is highly translucent with pale apple green streaks in some areas.

It would make a wonderful carving material and after polishing will have a delightfully tactile feel. Size is approximately 5x5x2.5 inches. Weight is 1.6kg or 3.4lbs. Moh hardness is7 to 7.5.
