Hand Carved Teko Teko Paua Eyes Table Lamp Maori NZ Rotarua. You are viewing a beautifully carved wooden New Zealand Maori Teko Teko Table Lamp with inlaid iridescent paua shell eyes. The intricate carving of wood is an art form that is handed down from generation to generation and is used by the Maori's to commemorating ancestors. Usually carved in postures of war dances or as Teko Teko with tongues thrust out, carrying clubs or spears... All these stances are fearful and in defiance of an enemy.
Paua eyes are used for the eyes because they reflected the light at night, making the carvings more lifelike, making the people feel as if they were being looked over and guarded by their ancestors while they slept at night. #TEKO TEKO is the Guardian Deity carving found at Apex of the Meeting House "Marae" (sacred place) It is customary to place figures in the corners of buildings.
It is considered a protector to ward off evil spirits and thought to represent Ancestral Chieftan who first brought the Waka Taua (War Canoe) to New Zealand during the Great Migration in 1315 from Hawaiki. Used by the Maori people to commemorating ancestors, carved in various postures of war dances with tongues thrust out, carrying clubs or spears (Said To Scare Away Evil Spirits) All in defiance of an enemy. Similar to the way the Christian religion sees Adam, Maori mythology refers to Tiki as the first man. The history of tiki culture dates back to ancient Polynesia.
This has a thatched reed lampshade, as it originally had a woven flax version, that was destroyed over time. Easy enough to add another light-shade of your choice of colour, size and design. This has a makers mark stamped in the back which reads "CARVED IN ROTORUA NEW ZEALAND" This would make a statement addition to any Tiki Bar or as tribal art decor for your house or a must-have for the avid Tiki Collector. In recent time the classic tropical Tiki Bar theme has been making a comeback. Today Modern Tiki Restaurants and Bars have incorporated lounges, live island bands, elaborate stage shows, and even thundershowers.
But have kept their tribal roots with brightly coloured fabrics, flaming torches, Rum-based drinks like the Mai Tai and Zombie flows freely and the Tiki Gods Statue maintain their scowling disposition..
