The 57th Regiment served throughout the Crimean war (1854-56), Inkermann (1854) Balaclava (1854) and Sevastopol (1855). It then left two companies behind in Aden in 1857, en route to India.
John Wright awarded Crimea medal and fought in all four battles, entitled to four battle clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Balaclava and Sebastopol. Headquarters of the 57th under the command of Colonel Warre were sent in May 1858 to Bombay, the two Companies in Aden joining them there after having been in Aden for two years.
During 1859 and 1860 the Regiment was occupying five different stations in India when orders were received on 3 November 1860, to hold the Regiment in readiness for service in New Zealand. This posting was immediately followed by seven years in New Zealand, including service in the Second Taranaki War (1863-66). (John Wright earned this medal during Maori wars). From 1867, it garrisoned Britain, Ireland and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). Then, in 1879, it sailed to the Zulu war (1879).
