Scarce Victoria Maori wars New Zealand medal 1861-64, official impressed name 3314 H. IMO Good Very fine condition, few marks, if any, very light bruise, minimal wear.

Henry Tisdale born 1837 Rathdowney, (Queens Co), County Laois, Ireland, attested for the 57th Foot at Birr, Ireland, on 12 March 1855, and served in New Zealand for 6 years 1 month (and so presumably with the main body of the Regiment from 1861-67). He was discharged unfit for service on 22 October 1867. He had suffered from disease causing partial blindness in right eye and loss of soft palate as a result of "Service in the field". Scarce Victorian mid 19thC medal for the New Zealand Maori wars Henry Tisdale 57th Regiment (West Middlesex) Scarce Victoria Maori wars New Zealand medal 1861-64, official impressed name 3314 H. Henry Tisdale born 1837 Rathdowney, (Queens Co), County Laois, Ireland, attested for the 57th Foot at Birr, Ireland, on 12 March 1855. 1861 world wide census he was serving in Cork, Ireland. He served in New Zealand campaign for 6 years 1 month (and so presumably with the main body of the Regiment from 1861-67). Census of 1901 shows living in Rathdowney as a labourer, he died in about 1905 aged about 68, death recorded at Abbeyleix, Co Laois.

Maori Wars 1860s British Camp Maori Wars Anglo-Maori "Land wars" were fought over land, Sovereignty, Law and Religion due to pressure from British settlers colonising New Zealand during the 19thC. Maori believed strongly that the land belonged to the community and not one person whereas European settlers believed in single owner/family ownership of land resulting in the conflict, starting in the North 1843-47. Later 1860-61 at North Taranaki and 1863-64 with the invasion of Waikato. Major wars were fought between Maori as the Hau Hau Maori spread, beyond Taranaki 1864-66.

Maori Warrior 6 April 1864 British Army platoon attacked at Te Ahu Ahu, near Oakura, New Plymouth. Seven soldiers died, with twelve injured. 30th April 1864 Attack on Sentry Hill Redoubt, near Waitara, by Hau Hau Mori. Mori death toll very high with 50 killed and about 60 injured. 14 May 1864 War Party of Hau Hau Mori from mainly Taranaki attack Moutoa Island, then being defending by Whanganui Mori who win the day.

24-25 January 1865 British Army engages Mori at Nukumaru, near Patea. 21 July 1865 Commander of British Army, Lieut-General Cameron, decides not to attack fortress at Weraroa, instead marching past. 14 January -1 February 1866 skirmishing continues in Taranaki at Otapawa, Ketemarae, Mawhitiwhiti, Ahipaipa and Waikoko. 2 August 2 October 1866 Fighting at Pokaikai, Ketemarae, Hawera, Waihi and Pungarehu. After a short period of peace fighting broke out again mid 1868 and into 1872.
