Scarce Victorian New Zealand medal 1845-66 (Dated 1864) 753. 40th Regt" and Long Service Good Conduct medal "14 B. Depot 83rd Royal Irish Rifles, both official impressed name, Good Very fine/almost extremely fine condition, He was born in Mohill, County Leitrim, Ireland, 16th December 1842, after joining the 40th Regiment (Somerset) 753 Pte J McGarty was posted to New Zealand in 1864 to fight in the Maori wars (aged about 22). The medal roll confirms medal and his battles, Paterangi, Orakau and Wairari in 1864, in 1871 he was discharged from the 40th Regiment, transferred to the 83rd Royal Irish Rifles, 14th Brigade, "Staff of the army", he was promoted up to Sergeant Major Quarter Master, earned LS & GC medal, retiring on pay as honourary 2nd Lieutenant in June 1882.

Depot 83rd Royal Irish Rifles, both official impressed name, Good Very fine, few minor contact marks, see pictures for condition. Anglo-Maori "Land wars" were fought over land, Sovereignty, Law and Religion due to pressure from British settlers colonising New Zealand during the 19thC. Maori believed strongly that the land belonged to the community and not one person whereas European settlers believed in single owner/family ownership of land resulting in the conflict, starting in the North 1843-47.

Later 1860-61 at North Taranaki and 1863-64 with the invasion of Waikato.
