Presenting a vintage hand carved wooden Maori Tiki box. This old example appears to have been produced as an early touristware piece for visitors to the iconic Buried Village archaeological site of Te Wairoa.
The box is decorated with a Maori Tiki face carved to the top of the hinged lid. The Tiki has been very well carved with exceptional attention to detail and finished with inlaid paua shell to form the dazzling eyes. Finely carved intricate Maori designs adorn each side of the box with the engraved lettering "Buried Village" and "Kia Ora" running diagonally to opposing sides. This well crafted box has an appealing rich dark finish.The timber has developed a pleasing mellow patina that only time can bring.
