VINTAGE MAORI TIKI HANDCARVED WOODEN MARIPI PATU WAR CLUB BY MULCAHY NEW ZEALAND. EXQUISITE VINTAGE HANDCARVED MAORI MARIPI PATU.

Presenting an exceptional vintage Maori Maripi Patu masterfully handcarved and signed by the noted artist Patrick Mulcahy QSM of Christchurch. This superb piece has been expertly handcarved from one solid piece of timber.

And beautifully detailed with traditional Maori designs. The club-like body is intricately carved with a pierced design and decorated with traditional swirling motifs intended to confuse the enemy. Discs of Paua shell are inlaid within the design with large inlaid discs to the tip. The stub of the handle features a finely carved Tiki head with inlaid paua shell eyes.

This piece is beautifully signed with the artists engraved name "Mulcahy" to one side of the handle. While this piece looks very much like an ornate Patu (and would perfectly compliment a collection of such) it was infact traditionally a cutting implement called a Maripi.

The pierced design allowed sharks teeth to be bound with fibre to the curved edge creating a fierce and imposing implement / weapon. This superb piece is presented in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs. This fine example has developed a lovely mellow patina that only time can bring.

This piece has been very well cared for and presents spectacularly. This impressive Maripi measures approx 415mms in length and 135mms in width. Patrick Mulcahy is an important figure in New Zealand Maori carving. Mulcahy has had several exhibitions, was commissioned to create important works at the Government House in Wellington and represented in both public and private collections.
