Whare Runanga Maori Tribal Meeting House Authentic Wood Carved Moko Statue 70s
There are numerous wood carvings of the iconic tattooed Maori face with abalone eyes as part of this piece, which is backed by a tatami-like straw mat wall. DIMENSIONS: Approximately 34" wide at the bottom, 32" tall to the top of the man statue, and 8 deep. SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THIS MEETING HOUSE. Each Tribal Meeting House bears the name of the person who is represented by the "tekoteko" or humanized figure at the apex of the gale. The roof structure represents his body. The "koruru" mask on the face of the gable apex being his face. The "hahihi" or gables his arms.

The "raparapa" or gable ends portrayed by "hgututa" or profile faces with four fingers protruding from them, his hands, the "tahuhu" or ridge timber, his spine, and the "heke" or rafters, his ribs. It is quite an awesome sight to stand in front of a large "whare-runanga" for the first time. Now you can have your own tribal meeting house at home or in your tattoo parlor - a truly amazing piece of art work. PROVENANCE : A 4 page brochure with an image of this piece certifies it as an Authentic Maori Carving Design.
