Though strange to find Commonwealth markings on American Expeditionary Forces equipment, there are documented cases of Commonwealth painted helmets re-painted and re-issued from supply depots during the war. Adopting the British Mark I steel helmet design, the Americans began producing the M-1917. Similar yet different, the American issued helmet saw the removal of the rubber "doughnut", the addition of machine riveted chinstrap bales, and hammered rim edging rather than welded. The rim is stamped "187 ZD" indicating manufacture by one of the seven companies that produced the steel for American helmets (unfortunately letter codes and manufacturing companies have yet to be correctly matched with certainty). Sadly the liner has been lost to time, common of many First World War helmets.
